Adolescent Gaming Addiction Treatment Is a Fast Growing Neccessity

An addiction is defined as a person needing a substance or behavior to keep going or an inability to control a craving. Video game addiction is compulsive use of a computer or a video game that interferes with daily life. Adolescents that suffer from this addiction isolate themselves from ordinary life and focus only on games or social media and if they are separated from said device they become miserable and irritated. Addiction to video games is a relatively new type of problem, but it is growing rapidly. If you feel that your teen is having a problem like this, you might need to look into adolescent gaming addiction treatment.

Video game addiction falls under the category of obsessive compulsive disorders, although it is not officially recognized as a psychological disorder. Parents recognize a problem when the games begin to interfere with a teen’s social relationships, grades, mood, and interpersonal communication skills. It is imperative that parents do not think that this is just a phase and that it will pass. Sometimes it does, but others develop even stronger gaming addictions as they get older.  If a teen continues to play even after they have lost friends and their grades have dropped, their gaming is a problem and they need help.

Treating video game addiction involves one of two types of treatment: cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) or detoxification.  CBT requires replacing the idea that playing video games does not hurt anyone and causing changes to occur in the compulsive behavior. This can be done by rewarding the teen for following imposed time limits or consequences for not following the new rules. The other method of teen gaming addiction treatment is detoxification which means taking the video game or computer away. In this case though, avoidance is impossible so the computer has to be reintroduced slowly and in a manner in which the teen understands proper limits. They have to understand that real life and human interaction is more fun than the cyber world.
